PSY305 Part 1-6

Part 1

Summarize what you used to think research methods was at the beginning of the course and think about how your ideas about research methods have changed as a result of what you have learned in this course. Be sure to explain how you have evolved to this new understanding of what research methods is and how it applies to your discipline.

Part 2

Watch the video on ethical data collection (Links to an external site.) and read the following about Henrietta Lacks:

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

First, let’s start with a question based on your opinion. Consider this:

Most Americans have their tissue on file somewhere. In 1999 the RAND Corporation published a report that more than 307 million tissue samples from more than 178 million people were stored in the United States. This number, the report said, was increasing by more than 20 million samples each year. These samples come from routine medical tests, operations, clinical trials and research donations.(See the New York Times article)

  • What do you think the repercussions would be if scientists were required to inform and get consent? Would restricting this impede scientific advancements and perhaps harm the public good?

After reading and viewing the materials on Henrietta Lacks, answer the following questions:

  • At the time of the incident (prior to the Belmont Report), was there an ethical breach in the medical care that Henrietta Lacks received?
  • Was there an ethical breach by the researchers who received Henrietta Lacks cells?

If this happened today:

  • What kind of “harm” may have been done to Henrietta or her family by the researchers (intentionally or unintentionally)?
  • Is there an ethical consequence for the Lacks family that we should be concerned about?
  • Identify other examples, beyond those in the video, of how data is being collected and used and the potential ethical standards that may be violated. How do you recommend that these situations are handled?

Part 3

Sampling Techniques

There are two overarching types of sampling, probability and nonprobability sampling. The most commonly used sampling techniques, which were discussed in your text, include random sampling, stratified random sampling and cluster sampling. These three sampling techniques are grouped under probability sampling because all members of the identified population have an equal chance of being selected for the sample. Convenience and quota sampling fall under the nonprobability sampling type because all members of the identified population do not have an equal chance of being selected for participation in the sample. Once you have identified your sample, you need to know how you are going to collect data from them.

FIELD NOTES

Each note should be composed of four parts:

  • Notes
  • Description of everything observed or that can be remembered
  • Analysis
  • Reflection

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

Find studies from your discipline that demonstrate each type of sampling technique.

  • What technique was applied?
  • Was it a representative sample? Why or why not?
  • Cite your studies.

Part 4

Please see attachment and also instructions below

FIELD NOTES

Each note should be composed of four parts:

  • Notes
  • Description of everything observed or that can be remembered
  • Analysis
  • Reflection

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

As you go through this week in your day-to-day life, find a couple of research articles and critique the following section of the article:

Methods

  • Who participated in the study? Are there enough details provided for you to be able to identify a similar sample if you were to replicate the study?
  • Who was the target population, and do the samples/participants reflect the target population? Based on the information provided, will the author(s) be able to generalize to the target population?
  • What was the procedure for selecting the sample? Is there a bias in the selection of the participants based on the sampling technique used?
  • Where was the data collected and how?

Part 5

Throughout the first two modules of this course, you have been completing the various sections of your research proposal using the Processfolio. By now you should have a clearly identified topic, research question, independent and dependent variables, a review of the literature, and an appropriate hypothesis based on the literature.

For your third and final Processfolio, you will describe your sample and appropriate sampling method. While working on this Processfolio, be sure to take into consideration responsible ethical research procedures. Even though you will not actually conduct your study, you need to propose a study that is meeting the ethical standards and guidelines we have been discussing throughout the course.

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

Submit your completed Processfolio #3 for this activity. Include:

  • Sampling description.
  • Data collection procedures.
  • Describe how you would ensure reliability and validity.
  • Discuss how you would communicate your findings.
  • Detail how you would obtain informed consent and debriefing (if applicable).

Part 6 (a)

Please see attachment and instructions below for (a)

For this assignment, you will need to develop a short survey using the best practices covered. If your research proposal includes survey administration for your data collection method and you have not found a survey/questionnaire that has been previously developed and validated by researchers in the field, then you are encouraged to develop a survey that will measure your dependent variable (you will need to include this in the appendix of your research proposal). If your data collection method does not include a survey, then you should select a topic for which you can develop a short survey.

Also see Hands-On Guide to Questionnaire Research.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Create your survey and submit in the dropbox. After the due date for the assignment passes, you will be assigned one of your classmates surveys, for which you will a peer review. To complete your assigned peer review, follow the directions outlined in the video below. You may also use the attached “Peer Review in Canvas Student Guide” to complete and view feedback.

Part 6 (b)

Think about the different data collection strategies covered in this module.

  • Are any of the data collection strategies commonly used in your field?
  • Identify a data collection strategy that is not commonly used in your field. Discuss either why it is not a good fit or make a brief case as to why professionals in your field should start using it.
  • How might you be able to use what you learned in this module in your life, personally and/or professionally?

  • Summarize and discuss the ways that formal policies of government have influenced the direction of historical and social development in the United States.
  • Recognize the major turning points in American history since the Civil War.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in contemporary U.S. history.
  • Write clearly and concisely about contemporary U.S. history using proper writing mechanics.

the thinking of immigration( write one paragraph and a letter, research required)

This assignment has two parts.

1) Read Desert Exile, by Yoshiko Uchida.

This is Yoshiko Uchida’s account of her family’s experience with anti-immigrant feelings and politics during World War 2. It is another chapter in America’s history. Even though we often hear the phrase the the United States is a “nation of immigrants”, the truth about that national content continually tests our national character.

Write a paragraph in which you connect Uchida’s experiences in the book with the experiences immigrants encounter today in the United States.

2) Take a virtual tour (online) of three immigration museums

There is a museum of immigration near the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island in New York City. It is an interesting monument to the history of European immigrants. Did you know that one-half of the population of the United States can trace their heritage back to people who entered the country through Ellis Island?

There is also a museum on San Francisco Bay’s Angel Island that features the stories of Chinese immigrants to the United States, as well as the California Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

Google these three museums to find their websites.

Once there, spend one hour surfing each site, taking notes as you go.

Then, write a letter to a friend or relative in which you persuade the reader to visit these sites either online or in person. Explain why reading the book by Uchida is important to understanding the history depicted in these museums.

Include the paragraph and the letter in ONE Word file to submit for this assignment.

Volunteers and employees are highly valued by organizations; however, they are also very different. Employees are engaged in a position that provides direct financial compensation while volunteers are in a position that provides different benefits to a volunteer’s life. Employees are highly protected by both state and federal laws for things such as minimum wage, family leave, unemployment, and child labor laws. The federal government also protects volunteers in the Volunteer Protection Act (1997) and “immunizes a volunteer from liability for harm caused by ordinary negligence, and prohibits the recovery of punitive damages unless the volunteer’s conduct was willful, criminal, or in conscious flagrant indifference to the rights or safety of the claimant” (p. 5). Employees need to be protected for their hours and against unlawful termination, while volunteers need to be protected from being sued if they make a mistake in any capacity.

When an organization chooses to bring on volunteers to help support their programs, they take a risk. Connors (2011) stated “risks generally cluster into five categories: people, property, income, goodwill, and liability” (p. 323). A volunteer could potentially make mistakes with clients, misuse equipment, or harm the company’s reputation in the community. Recently, my organization was in the media with reports that we were putting children at risk by putting them in homes without appropriately trained caregivers. We have a program called Safe Families that offers to the general public the ability to place their child in a volunteer’s home temporarily if they need a few weeks without their children but do not want child protective services involvement. Many families that utilize this program are homeless or need to go to rehab/jail for a short time so the volunteers take care of their children while the parents do not lose their parental rights or become involved with the courts. While in theory this is an amazing program, it comes with its fair share of risks because there is complete liability on our organization rather than on the county with a judge, social worker, and trained foster parents. Any organization that strives to have a large volunteer population must be prepared to deal with possible repercussions if they arise.

History discussion prompt

For Blog #5, please answer all parts of the prompt and be sure that your initial post reaches the full 400 word minimum requirement. Don’t forget to also post a response of at least 200 words to a peer’s post as well!

Please write a 400 word discussion:

1) How did Indigenous peoples resist during the time period of the missions? Be sure to provide specific examples.

2) How does the term “Manifest Destiny” relate to the chapter “Sea to Shining Sea” from our textbook? Be sure to provide specific examples from the textbook.

3) What were your reactions to Deborah Miranda’s article? What stood out to you, and why?

4) How does your K-12 education relate to the experiences mentioned in Lim’s article article? Why might this be problematic? How might this problem be resolved, or what does Lim advocate for in the article?

5) What stood out to you in the article “What the ‘California Dream’ Means to Indigenous Peoples”? What does the “California Dream” mean to Indigenous peoples, and what solution does Chilcote suggest?

Respond 200 words to this student:

1. Most of the written history claims that Indigenous peoples did not resist during the time period of the missions, though through this reading we learned otherwise. During this time, they were banned from practicing many parts of their culture, such as speaking their native tongue, eating their cultural foods, and practicing their religions. They resisted quietly by practicing their culture anyways. They resisted the force of conforming to Catholicism and withstood the punishments for continuing to practice their own traditions.

2. The term “Manifest Destiny” relates to the chapter “Sea to Shining Sea” because this was the excuse the colonists used to force their missions on native lands. They justified themselves by saying that they had a God-given right to expand and grow in the United States. In history, it is written that natives did not have much resistance to the missions but in the book it is noted that, “Very few visitors notice, however, that in the middle of the plaza is a whipping post”. The term manifest destiny assumes god given right for the missions, that acquiring this land was destiny, though it does not specify the use of force available to attain this “god-given” right.

3. As a child in California, I have memories of learning about and visiting different California Missions. Reading her article, it brought me back to those memories and shows even further that our education has failed us once again. Once again, if it weren’t for this class, I would have never known any different. In Deborah’s article, she mentions the mom who assumed indigenous people were no longer around. Because we have learned the very minimum of history about the subject, the mom just goes to represent the misinformation that is taught and without further education, would never be known.

4. My K-12 education, as I’ve stated, never went into the depth of history about Indigenous peoples. We learned breif overviews of the Missions and how they came to be. I am pretty sure we even had a mission day where we learned how to function like the Spanish. We, even then, were taught to glorify the Spanish and what they created on those sites. The suffering of the Natives was and most of the time is overlooked in public school systems. For the future, we need to go back and rework the narrative that is told to our children.

5. The part that stood out to me in “What the ‘California Dream’ Means to Indigenous Peoples” was the statement that “The California dream depends on the disappearance of Indigenous peoples”. They claim that they have always just been in the way of settler’s colonization. Chilcote suggests that the opposite is true for natives. They suggest that a California Indian Dream is only achievable through complete decolonization.

Assignment

Memos are an important part of our professional communications toolbox. This exercise will demonstrate your ability to compose an effective, short memo using the proper conventions and format of the standard business memo.

Audience

When writing to professional peers who are unknown to you personally, you must minimize the use of acronyms, jargon, or inside references that your readers may not understand. One approach is to imagine an individual reader as you draft your document. You should base your message upon either knowledge or intelligent speculation about answers to these questions:

• What can you reasonably assume this reader knows and does not know?

• What are the reader’s “hot buttons” (that is, key issues and phrases that stimulate the reader’s interest)?

• What information, questions, solutions, or action steps does the reader expect from your message?

• What is the urgency of your communication with the reader? Does your message require minutes, hours, days, weeks, or months for a response? Is it a “policy statement” that will endure for a long time?

• What is the main purpose of your communication with the reader — response to reader’s previous message? call to action? information? heads-up (warning)? suggestion? recommendation?

Answers to these questions will have a major impact on the length and style of your message.

Subject

Read the article on Engineering Scholarships at:

https://tinyurl.com/yaknazoe (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Then, write a brief and properly-formatted memo to one of the Deans of the College of Engineering about this scholarship program. You should inform the Dean about the scholarship and encourage the Dean to work with companies in the Tampa Bay area to institute a similar scholarship on our campus. You should cite the benefits of this scholarship and perhaps mention some local companies that may be potential scholarship sponsors. You must also address a specific Dean who may be receptive to your memo. You do not need to actually present this memo to the Dean; this is an in-class memo intended to acquaint you with the conventions and format of memos in the business world.

FORMAT

Use MS Word or a similar word processor to create a single-spaced memo of around 350 words. Use 12-point type, 8-1/2” x 11” document size, with default margins (1.25” right and left, and 1” top and bottom) Use 12-point boldface, upper case for section headings within the body of your memo.

Follow formatting directions in this assignment, the Web links, and the sample memos in our text.

Post your completed memo to this Assignment area no later than the due date for this week’s assignments.
