Case Study 1

Donald is a 54-year-old paper mill employee. He has adult children and 7 grandchildren with his wife of 30 years. Donald began to experience problems with worrying during his first few years of marriage. He would worry excessively about finances, his job security and performance, fixing up the house, his children and their futures, and his parents’ health. Since that time he has also worried uncontrollably about the car breaking down, his grandchildren being harmed, saving enough for retirement, his own health, and his wife’s health.

Donald’s worry has interfered with his ability to enjoy his life, including holidays and special occasions, as he always feels tense, restless, and on guard. He has also turned down multiple promotions at work due to excessive worry that he couldn’t handle the increased stress, responsibilities, and being around others. He often worries about whether his coworkers like him. In addition, Donald worries that he will not be able to keep up with the new technology being used at his job. His worrying also prevented him from exploring other jobs outside of the mill due to worry he would fail and end up losing the family home. His back and neck constantly ache from the tension. His worrying has also led to long-term problems falling asleep. He has become dependent on over-the-counter sleeping pills and is still easily fatigued most days.

Friends and family complain that Donald is always on the go and never sits still, but this is the only way he knows how to block the worries from his mind. Sometimes he experiences upsetting images about his grandchildren being injured or harmed when worrying about them. Twice in the past, these images have been accompanied by feelings associated with a heart attack including sweating palms, dizziness, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath. Each time he went to the emergency room, he was released after tests were run confirming that he was not going to have a heart attack.

Around times of stressful life events (e.g., during his daughter’s divorce) Donald tends to experience an increase in his worrying frequency and intensity, but his reaction is always stronger than other people’s. After a bad period of worry he often feels depressed for weeks afterwards, including having no pleasure or interest in his usual activities. Donald feels envious of the enjoyment and relaxation other people seem to get from life and he often feels hopeless when it comes to managing his worry. He just does not understand why he is not able to relax the way others are. He is very concerned that he may develop health problems due to his excessive worrying and he sometimes wonders whether his worrying actually increases the odds of bad things happening to him.

Case Study Template

Follow the example below as you complete your Case Study assignment. You will have 3 major areas to your case study response: (1) key issues, (2) diagnostic impressions, and (3) treatment recommendations. This assignment does need an APA-formatted title page, and you are required to cite the sources for the treatment recommendations and include a reference page. It should be 3–4 pages for content. The case study assignment is an opportunity for you to think through a clinical case, identify and prioritize key issues involved, consider and clarify relevant diagnostic issues, and formulate treatment recommendations that are most likely to be helpful to the client.

  1. Key Issues

    1. List in order of importance the key issues you believe are involved in the case study, as if you were the client’s counselor. Provide a rationale for the order in which you prioritized issues. What are the most important features to you, and why?

    2. Link your rationale to what you believe outcomes of treatment should be for this client. How will your order of priority contribute to a successful outcome for the client?

  1. Diagnostic Impressions

    1. Based on the information provided in the case study, use the current version of the DSM to accurately diagnose the type(s) of disorder(s) involved. Refer to specific diagnostic criteria when presenting your impressions. What category could this be in? What disorder in that category does this appear to be and why? Provide rationale for diagnosis, giving consideration to differential diagnostic considerations. In other words, what disorders in this category or other closely related categories were considered? Why could this not be any of those disorders?

    2. Be sure to consider other disorders in addition to the main disorder. Is there more than one diagnosis? Provide rationale for diagnosing any additional disorders.

  1. Treatment Recommendations (cite sources in this section)

    1. List your recommendations (e.g., 1., 2., 3., etc.) so that you can clearly delineate what you believe will be of most help to your client. Consider recommendations that will be motivating to your client and reflective of a collaborative approach.

    2. Be sure to consider the biopsychosociospiritual aspects of the case. Make sure your recommendations are relevant to the case, able to be implemented by the client, and have some basis of support from professional literature—include academic sources here (2–3).

Philosophy discussion posts

Please answer question 1 in at least 5 sentences and and then respond to the two response questions in at least 5 sentences as well. You can just include the answers in the final document. These are just short response answers and don’t have to be written in apa or mla format. Feel free to use google to look up the reading on Perry’s ” A Dialogue concerning Personal Identity and Immortality” .

1. Answer some of the following questions about Perry’s “A Dialogue Concerning Personal Identity and Immortality” in at least 5 sentences. What observations or questions do you have about the reading? What do you think about the various theories: soul, psychology, and body? Which theory do you favor and why? What sorts of scenarios do you think we can survive (fetus, amnesia, transplant, teletransportation, others) and why? Do you agree that each theory has a way to account for life after death? If not, why? Be sure to ground your answers in the reading.

Response #1 The reading of Perry’s “A Dialogue Concerning Personal Identity and Immorality” was very intriguing and made me think a lot in concerns with my beliefs and how the coincided with the other various theories that were brought up. With religion playing a major role in what and how I believe certain things and aspects, my views have opened and made me understand the other views and how they come to form. I think the various theories have their own perks, as to what the focus of the theory and how it can be applied to society. The theory I favor would probably have to be the psychology theory due to the main reasoning being that of our memories and experiences shape and mold us into who we are and what we may become in the future. That these experiences and memories also distinguish who we are, and how we are different from those around us. I don’tthink we can survive teletransportation, as I also believe a sort of the body theory, and as our bodies get destroyed, we are not who we have come to know. On the other hand, our psychology can survive teletransportation and we could also live through that. I do believe that each theory has its own account for life after death, which is unique understanding how each theory takes its hold on such a controversial topic. That although some may believe in life after death, the theories provide possibilities in backing up a possible way in surviving after death.

Response #2 In “A Dialogue Concerning Personal Identity and Immortality” we read about the conversations between two people and their different stances on life after death. This was my favorite reading because I feel we were all Weirob in a way as students taking this class, and Professor Hess explained to us all the different theories, but ultimately we make up our own minds, and decide for ourselves what we think is valid. I found it interesting how Weirob was a philosophy professor and yet did not believe in the slightest possibility of life after death and seemed to not have heard of the multiple theories such as, soul and body. She had some good arguments for Miller’s theories such as the Kleenex argument that if you destroy a box of Kleenex it does not survive or come back. I do not believe in the body theory, but if I had to pick I would say I believe in the soul theory, that states you only survive if your soul survives, i believe in this theory because I think your soul is who you truly are and not your body.

answer the questions and response to the posts

Please answer these questions each one in spirit file please

the first file includes the answers for those questions

1. How do core competencies change between domestic and international response?

2. Discuss the concept of humanitarian aid, provide an example and analyze the political ramifications.

the second file includes the response for these 2 posts

1st post

Humanitarian aid is typically the service delivery of international humanitarian organizations according to principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence in temporary conflict situations, where humanitarians can work without hindrance and follow the humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality and humanity. International humanitarian aid accomplishes this through a goal directed behavior which is strongly influenced by the environment and is characterized by division of labor that depends on continuous communication. The intended outputs of the aid are providing life-sustaining services to civilians who are at risk due to violent conflict or natural disaster, where as the unintended outputs are economic and political consequences of aid (Hilhorst, 2010).

Exogenous factors influences aid by shaping its environment. For the humanitarian relief system, one of the most important exogenous factors is the role of political interests in creating the humanitarian crisis. On-going violent conflicts constitute the most politically charged situations, than compared to natural disaster, which makes coordination difficult as the political nature of conflict makes relations between organizations tense, particularly if humanitarian and military organizations are both involved (Seybolt, 2009)

For example, the politicization of humanitarian assistance was clearly evident in Indo-China during the late 1970s and 1980s. After the Vietnamese army overthrew the Cambodian Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, dozens of international NGOs stepped in to help both the people who fled the country and those who remained in Cambodia. But aid workers on the Thai border (where the Khmer Rouge had regrouped) and in Phnom Penh (where Vietnam installed a new government) had radically different views about where limited international resources should be spent. Ultimately, the United Nations stepped in and had to provide relief separately: UNHCR aided Cambodians inside Thailand, while the separately funded United Nations Border Relief Operation assisted the larger population of displaced persons who remained on the Thai-Cambodian border (Seybolt, 2009).

Such disagreements over who deserves supports can complicate the scene, which significantly affects the people who are dire need of assistance. Therefore, factors such as the political interests of the parties in a conflict and the countries that donate money and material to aid efforts majorly influences humanitarian aid systems. Competing political interests exert pressure on the humanitarian aid relief and therefore, aid organizations should always strive to resist the urge to politicize their work and epitomize on the principle of political neutrality.

2nd post

Humanitarian aid can be defined under four principles: humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence. The principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality were established by the United Nation General Assembly in 1991, and independence was added in 2004. (Rysaback-Smith, 2015)

  • Humanity refers to the provision of aid to all who are in need, wherever the need exists, with the purpose to protect and respect all human beings.
  • Neutrality is the responsibility of aid organizations not to choose sides in a conflict or to favor a particular political, religious or ideological bent.
  • Impartiality demands aid to be given based on need alone and based on any other distinctions including gender, race, nationality, ethnicity, class, political party or religious belief.
  • Independence refers to the requirement that aid organizations are autonomous from any political or military objectives or with those goals in mind.

The European Commission (EC) provides needs-based humanitarian assistance to the people hit by man-made and natural disasters with particular attention to the most vulnerable victims. Aid is given impartially to the affected populations, regardless of their race, ethnic group, religion, gender, age, nationality or political affiliation. The EC through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) promotes the global respect of International Humanitarian Law and of the humanitarian principles. (European Commission, 2017)

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict. It spells out the responsibilities of states and non-state armed groups during an armed conflict. This set of rules defines, among others, the right to receive humanitarian assistance, protection of civilians, including medical and humanitarian workers, and the protection of refugees, prisoners, the wounded and sick. The IHL is based on the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, and the 1977 and 2005 additional protocols. (European Commission, 2017)

Normative value of the actual

This discussion begins with the concept of the normative value of the actual. This refers to the idea that what is out there, around us every day, seems normal. That what is always around us seems right.

So let us think a moment about the word “normal.” We say this all the time. But what do we really mean when we call things ‘normal?’

Artists, scientists, writers, parents, teachers constantly question the notion of what makes something ‘normal.’ Now it is your turn!

You task is to describe a particular “normal” cultural phenomenon that you encounter often. It can be anything- school, movies, ads, a show, a trend… anything.

Explain why and how you came across this phenomenon, and try to account for its categorization as ‘normal.’ Does everyone do / think / say this thing? Does no one question it? Do people seem to accept it? For how long? Is it traditional? New?

After you’ve explained the phenomenon, write a few questions encouraging your colleagues to join you in looking closer at this “normal” part of our culture. You could also write a few sentences offering some insight as to why the phenomenon might NOT be normal after closer inspection.

In 600-800 words.

Group Case Study Project – Week 4

COLLAPSE

Suppose you want to bring about a change in your organization. Do you really know how to go about making that change? You may use some type of strategy to convey the change process. You may also focus on the impact of the change and how it will benefit the organization. However, some employees might resist this change, so you need to have a backup plan to convince these employees.

Read the following case:
