Amphetamine Use and Abuse

Assignment 2: LASA I—Amphetamine Use and Abuse

Aaliyah continues to struggle with balancing her work hours and her schoolwork. She has been drinking coffee to help her stay awake, but it is no longer working. She has an exam coming up and needs to stay up to study.

Aaliyah decides to take an amphetamine to stay awake to study for the exam. She promises herself that she will only take it this one time for the exam. The drug allows her to stay awake and alert while she is studying for the exam. She also feels that she is learning the material better as a result of the amphetamine. When the grades are in, Aaliyah receives an A on her work.

As the semester continues, Aaliyah turns to amphetamines more and more often to help her stay awake to complete her schoolwork. Soon, Aaliyah finds that one pill no longer keeps her awake as long as she needs.

She starts taking more than one pill at a time. She knows that taking amphetamines so often is not good for her health, and she finds she experiences an increase in headaches when she takes them, but she continues to take them because they are helping her be successful in school and at work.

Based on the case study, prepare a paper that addresses the following:

  • Examine the change in amphetamine use and abuse in the U.S. from the 1950s to the present.
  • Explain to which schedule amphetamines belong and why they are on the Schedule of Controlled Substances.
  • Explain the effects Aaliyah might be experiencing as a result of her regular amphetamine use. Be sure to include:
    • Acute effects, chronic effects, and withdrawal
    • Effects on physiology (brain and body), behavior, mood, and toxicity
  • Give at least three indications from the case study suggesting there may be a problem with Aaliyah’s substance use. That is, describe at least three likely behaviors that Aaliyah is likely to exhibit if she is misusing amphetamines.

Determine whether Aaliyah has an abuse problem or a dependency problem. Include a discussion of DSM-IV-TR criteria. Use the template to help you make the assessment.

Write a 4-5-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc.

Use the writing prompt and questions below to foster your conversation about drinking and responsibility. Remember you don’t just directly answer the questions but use them to fuel your discussion. You must post your original response by Thursday to receive full points for timeliness and your replies to two classmate by the due date.

Discuss your opinions about the responsibilities that a host or hostess has for guests when serving alcohol. What are the legal implications if one of your guests has an automobile accident after leaving your party? Should a guest have a drinking responsibility to the host? Do you believe that there are different legal implications for bartenders who serve too much alcohol to a customer who then has an auto accident?

1 believe that If a person has a party, he or she is responsible for every person at that party. Most bartenders see that the guests had too many drinks and can’t do much about it. Even though there could be several people going in and out, there should be a few people to look out for others to ensure their safety. If a bar wants to have more of an eco-safe workplace there should be a way that a drunk guest has a ride home. If there was a partnership with uber, or lyft for drunk guests that would eliminate several automobile accidents after a party. Regarding legal implications, I don’t think there should be any for the bartenders due to the fact that the staff could be short or the party could be crowded.

TaR 2In my opinion the responsibility that the host/hostess has a is hard one. Because when its your job to serve drinks thats just what you have to do. I do believe that if someone is clearly extremely intoxicated that you no longer serve that person anymore drinks for their own ssafety. Host/hostess can even call a cab for the drunkards. However, When they serve liquor they are serving to someone that is 21 years of age and older, so therefore, he/she is in charge of themselves. I don’t believe that there are legal implication for those that enter a car accident once they leave the party.

3When hosting a party that is providing alcohol, a host or hostess should provide alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks so guests are not forced to drink only alcohol. They should also have an alcohol drink limit, this can also reduce the host/hostess cost of creating the party. An alcoholic beverage limit can also prevent people from being very intoxicated. In addition, I do not think there should be any legal implications if a guest gets into a car accident after leaving the party. On the other hand, if someone, including the host/hostess, sees that person getting into the car intoxicated and does not make the ethical decision to give that person a ride, legal actions should be taken placed. Since the host/hostess will have a drink limit, creating legal implication for the bartender would be foolish, plus it is only their job. All in all, a host/hostess and their guest have a responsibility when attending a party and everybody should make their own decisions

4As a host for a party at my house, I do not feel comfortable giving anybody alcohol; even if they are twenty-one or older because I would be upset if anybody got into a car accident once they left my house. I definenlty would not give alcohol to people who are under twenty-one because I would be reliable if they were to get into an accident once they left my house. According to Jose A. Alvarez, five penalties for me giving alcohol to minors include a citation and arrested, a fine for $1,000 or more, sentenced to jail for at least six months, and billed for law enforcement services. I believe the guest has a drinking responsibility to the host. If the host does not feel comfortable giving the guest a drink, then the guest should not pressure the host into giving them a drink. I do believe there are different legal implications for bartenders who serve too much alcohol to a consumer and causes the consumer to get into a car accident.

Then, respond to this question, do you think the Alternative Vote should replace your current Winner take All System for elections for President. Explain in 6-8 sentences. Also, please respond to at least one of your classmates comments in 2-3 sentences.

response:

Yes, the Alternative vote, or instant runoff voting should replace the current Winner take All system for the presidency when it comes down to elections. Mathematically this formula or structure is much more “superior” in regards to electing a President the majority actually favor, than what is used now. There are however flaws with the alternative vote method, just as there are with the winner takes all. Both have a few problems, such as the prevention of gerrymandering, proportional representation, calling for political diversity, etc. The big difference between the two is while the winner takes all can be ineffective and induce the spoiler effect, the alternative vote method eliminates the spoiler effect. Basically, replacing this method would allow for people to vote for individuals they wanted to, but normally wouldn’t have, due to the concerns stemming from the winner takes all method(smaller parties/nominations being shot down immediately). It would allow for the populis to be more engaged in politics, or want to be, and feel more so that they have a voice or, options. I believe it also would help bring up the younger generation’s failure to be engaged in politics at that level and as well dismay political burnout, which induces lower voter turnouts. Lastly, I think it’s a simpler solution in the long run. It would even up the playing field and allow for many candidates and parties that are smaller and haven’t received as much “love” if you will, to grow and sink deeper roots into politics being voters would no longer be afraid to vote for whom they want too.

Here is a brief video example of CBPR happening in Detroit to get you started (you do not need to comment on this video; it is simply one example to get you started thinking about CBPR in action):

https://youtu.be/0oDiBTAgSjc

Discuss: For your discussion this week, please do the following.

  • Find a video or research example (article or website) of CBPR by conducting an Internet search or using CBPR
    • Make sure the example is truly CBPR. CBPR is different from community-engaged research or community-based research; the participatory aspect of CBPR is important.
  • Choose an example that identifies itself as CBPR.
  • Share a link to your choice and describe the study or project for your initial post.
  • Discuss the value you see in having the community lead the change efforts in the given example.
  • Explain why it is preferable for the community to lead rather than researchers come in from the outside to push for change within the community.

Radioactive atoms are unstable because they have too much energy. When they release their extra energy, they are said to decay. When studying cesium-137, a nuclear engineer found that over 365 days, 1,000,000 radioactive atoms decayed to 977,287 radioactive atoms. Assuming that the decay follows the Poission distribution, find its variance. Round your answer to the nearest tenth.
