There are two components to this week’s homework.

Part 1

Prepare a section of your Capstone Portfolio by answering the following question:

What is the nature and purpose of criminal law? In your response, identify commonalities of purpose within law enforcement, corrections, the courts, and social services.

This assignment will make up section 3b of your final Capstone Portfolio. Your paper should be a minimum of 1 to 2 pages.

Part 2

Assess the impact of incarceration on victims, society, and the criminal justice system. Please include a thorough analysis of both the positive and negative impacts.

Community corrections is an alternative to incarceration. By moving the function of corrections back into the community, how can we, both as members of society and members of the criminal justice system, manage and reduce the risk to the community?

This assignment will make up component 3c of your final Capstone Portfolio. Your paper should be a minimum of 1 to 2 pages.

Part I: Brief Essay Post (200 points)

• Choose a current issue in the news right now or a current issue in your major, and compose a brief argumentative essay (no more than 600 words) in which you make as many informal fallacies as you can. Do not use religion, gay marriage or abortion. A minimum of 5 fallacies are required, though the more you make, the better you may do on this assignment. Do not identify the fallacies, as your peers will be doing that in Part II.
• Fallacies outside the ones presented in the slideshow will not be accepted.

Part II:

Choose TWO of your peers’ essays that HAVE NOT received a response, read their essays, and complete the following for them (you may number your replies as they are listed below):

1. Summarize the essay and identify the major claim/thesis. (no more than 2-3 sentences).
2. Identify each fallacy by quoting and naming it. This can be in list form.
3. Choose two of the fallacies and explain to the author what the fallacy is and how they might fix it. Be gentle, and pretend they did not do it on purpose.
4. I will provide paragraphs for you guys to make the comments on them.

Can making specific english class for a major help become better writer in a specific field of study.

Above is my attempt to make a hypothesis at this moment. I need to work on it better to make it not a yes or no kind of hypothesis. With this question though, I think with a little work it can become a good research. The reason I believe it can be a good research is because english is important, but as a college student trying hard to graduate in four years does not help when the school requires students to take english classes that is not affiliated with their major. In my case I am communications major but I am pursuing a career in law enforcement. Two different majors, but that is my choice. I am focussing on the criminal justice side for this project. Student in CRJ and want a career in law enforcement need to learn how to write properly but in the mind set of report writing not reading a book and writing a book report on the book. Have a specific english class for specific majors to take would be more ideal then making students take an english class that does not help them except put them through school longer.

Research is an integral part of the public and nonprofit sectors. Budget analysts use research to generate revenue forecasts. Management analysts use research to determine if a program is serving citizens effectively. In nonprofit organizations, development directors use research to identify potential donors. As you can see, research occurs every day in all public and nonprofit organizations.

Research used for evaluation is especially challenging in the public and nonprofit sectors. Unlike their counterparts in the private sector, public administrators implement programs that produce “soft” and intangible results. Imagine the situation of a school administrator who implements an after-school counseling program for at-risk youth. One of the “soft” results of this program may be an increase in the self-esteem of a student. Self-esteem is a difficult concept to measure and may be measured in a variety of ways.

Or, consider a nonprofit organization that develops a program to help recovering addicts obtain gainful employment. While the measurement of whether or not the individual obtained a job is rather tangible and obvious, the confidence the individual gains as a result of participating in the program is intangible and much more difficult to measure. In order to measure the more challenging intangible results administrators rely on research. It is imperative for administrators to know how to conduct research in order to evaluate programs so that they can promote the values of efficiency, effectiveness, individual rights, and social equity.

For this Discussion, select a public or nonprofit organization with which you are familiar, or choose an organization from the Virtual Community of New Harbor, Delaware. Consider how research and evaluation could benefit this organization. A good place to start is to consider a program, problem, or policy that the organization may want to address in further detail.

Post by Day 3 a description of how research and evaluation can be used by this organization. Explain what program, problem, or policy could be addressed by research, and how this could benefit the organization.

• Introductory Paragraph to Topic: Refer to the Final Argumentative Essay guidelines for your topic selection. Write an introductory paragraph with at least 150 words, which clearly explains the topic, the importance of further research, and ethical implications.
• Thesis statement: Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the solution to the problem that you will argue or prove in the Week Five Final Argumentative Essay. A thesis statement should be a declarative statement that makes one point in 25 words or less. The thesis statement must appear at the end of the introductory paragraph.
• Annotated Bibliography: Develop an annotated bibliography to indicate the quality of the sources you have read. For each annotation, you need to summarize in your own words how the source contributes to the solution of the global societal issue. Your annotation should be one to two paragraphs long (150 words or more) and fully address the purpose, content, evidence, and relation to other sources you found on this topic.
