I thought that last week’s discussion board assignment was very interesting to complete as well as to see what perspectives others had. I found that a lot of students felt that some form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy would better serve this client and their immediate needs and that most fully explained the concept of the 12 step program and gave supporting information.

In my opinion I felt that a lot of students were quick to come to a conclusion of what steps needed to be taken when we were not presented with a full scope of information. For example a lot of students felt that the client needed detox. I did not think that determination could be made without a thorough assessment to determine the scope of the client’s needs. We do not know what the client had addiction issues with and to what degree as well as any other co-contributing conditions.

I have always felt discussion board assignments to be helpful. Not only does it provide an area to receive constructive criticism, which is necessary for growth, but it provides a broad range of perspectives. I have always felt that discussion boards are a great part of the classes because it facilitates the thought process and collaboration. I do think that students are hesitant to respectfully disagree or expand upon another’s post with their input. I think that if there were a way to encourage (perhaps in a points based way?) a reply to peers who have posted a response to your individual post that it would further facilitate discussion. In my experience if I reply to someone who responded to my post my reply has almost never gotten a reply. Or another example is when you ask a question in response to someone’s post you most often do not get a reply.

I do not have any questions pertaining to this assignment at this time. I feel that between the chat and the discussion board I have a good grasp on the materials. As always, reading my peers’ posts helps to learn the information as well as additional information that may not have been focused on when writing my own post.

I will monitor the board and weigh in as students post, and will intervene if the conversation is going in a direction not conducive to learning.

Discussion Post Questions:

1.) During the early part of the Middle Ages, records show that there were more men than women. As a result, women were in demand as wives. The value of women and their status in society increased. Men actually paid high prices to the fathers of girls in order to marry them. But why do you think so many women were treated so poorly by the husbands that wanted to marry them?

2.) What do you think of King Arthur’s Round Table? Do you think something like that, which championed equality and justice, could have existed in the Middle Ages, when hierarchy and status were so important? Or is it likely just a myth, designed to make King Arthur seem kinder, wiser, and more egalitarian than his peers?

3.) And old adage warns never to discuss religion or politics with friends or company…. and some would add religion and science to that list too, of controversial topics. Do you think Thomas Aquinas was right that science and faith can co-exist? Or do you think we should always keep those separate?

4.) If you lived during the Middle Ages, and could only choose one of the following, what would you choose and why?:
Choice A: could read and write, but never traveled outside of your home town
Choice B: can’t read or write, but can travel far because you are a knight
Choice C: can’t read or write, but can play music with the troubadours
Choice D: Live as the king, but your literacy is minimal, so you always need someone to read for you and record your notes, ideas, and history.

5.) Dante felt very strongly that the worst sin a person could commit was treason — makes sense, right? He was betrayed by everyone who he loved and trusted. Do you agree that this crime should be at the bottom of hell, or is something else more deserving? Explain.

Create a fictionalized diary for Darwin that describes the changes in his thinking about evolution. Here are the guidelines:

1) It should be written in the first person, as if you were Darwin.

2) It should be 1 1/2 to 2 pages, singled-spaced, with a double space between entries.

As a nurse leader, it is important to understand a variety of leadership models and styles. This will help you adapt to different settings and apply strategies to support and inspire others. It may also be necessary to apply models in different professional settings to satisfy certification requirements.

This assignment is composed of two parts, a graphic organizer and a written paper.

Part I: Graphic Organizer

Research five leadership models and styles. One model must be transformational leadership.

Design a graphic organizer to compare servant leadership with the other models. Consider how these models or styles bring about organizational, team, or individual change or growth. How do leaders implement each of the models and how do they fit with your personal beliefs?

Part II: Personal Model of Leadership Paper

Write a 1,000-1,250 word paper about your personal model of leadership, including the following:

1. How may your personal model of leadership be applied in your professional setting?
2. How does your personal model of leadership compare to the models you researched for the graphic organizer?
3. Does your personal model follow the lines of servant leadership or transformational leadership?

Submit the graphic organizer and paper to your instructor.
