The cycle counting is crucial to the Cole hardware. First, it helps them to keep an accurate track of all the inventories in the four stores for inventory valuation. For instance, when a client asks for an item, they can easily locate the store which has it quickly (BNETvideo, n.d). With thousands of items in the stores, it is difficult to know where to find a specific thing without the handheld scanners. Employees are provided with the handheld scanners which they move within the stores scanning items and keeping their locations. These technology has helped the Cole Hardware to grow over time.

Sarah, Is the cycle counting a part of the everyday selling of a product? Is that what you meant? “Cycle counting helps employees find the location.” I can see where you could look up the item in the hand held scanner and check the location. Does the hand held scanner keep a record of all the inventory? I guess it does. You could enter the name of the product, and the scanner would tell you the location and if you had any; or, as you say, if another store has it. I guess you could do this to at the computer at the register. I’m wondering if the hand held has the items by name. I can see if you could scan a barcode the hand held would have the data. Someone who has actually done this may help me understand this better 🙂

I read a bit more about the scanners, and learned that there are used to scan in the inventory items as they are received in the warehouse or shipping dock or back door. Yes, That makes sense now. The hand held syncs with the computer system. How do they sync? Wirelessly? I’d think not. Maybe at the regular times.

The term cycle counts is for the use of the scanner in taking small, repeated inventories of items in the store. I got a bit confused thinking of the scanner in terms of sales data. If you mention cycle counts, you know this refers to counting the inventory in cycles throughout the period.

I believe using technology to keep track of inventory and your sales on a daily, monthly and yearly basis is an excellent way to know what is going on in all of the 4 stores that are owned it saves the owner time in knowing what the stored are doing and if he needs to worry about any of his stores. it is also good customer service when someone calls and you do not have the item in the store that he customer called but in another store where either the customer can go and get it or be brought to the store they called. It shows that you care about the customer and will help in any way. Also, inventory is a huge undertaking. When you have 40,000 plus items in a store you need some type of technology to keep track of all of it. If you were to do this by hand it would take you triple the time without the computer. Employees have the hand held scanners which they carry with them at all times to scan items and keep track of them. Even though it is expensive I think it is worth the money to put into your business and help it grow and prosper.
