 Cognition and Our Environment

Cognition and Our Environment

Prior to engaging in this discussion, read Chapter 4: Cognition, Learning, and the Environment in your required e-book, review the article “Socially Situated Cognition in Perspective” and the Instructor Guidance, and view the video What Are Schemas? (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

Cognition incorporates numerous variables that are suggested to affect how we learn. For this discussion please address the following theories that support this suggestion:

  • Evaluate and discuss the applicability of Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. Why are developmental phases important to consider when addressing how we learn?
  • How does effective schema development affect our ability to move knowledge (memories) from working memory to long-term memory?
    • How do the differing types of schema (Table 4.2: Types of comprehension-associated schema in your required e-book) potentially play differing roles? Why might one type of schema be harder for a person to develop than another?
  • How does the term reciprocal determinism further explain the dynamic of learning that is suggested to be affected by our environment? (social learning theory and social cognitive theory)
  • Based on your previous answers, how do these sub-theories and frameworks affect your own learning success, past and future?

SOC 203

The Sociological Imagination

In order to do understand and develop a sociological imagination, we must be able to see a social problem from many perspectives. This is the goal of our first discussion. For example, experts are warning us about the dangers of obesity, a problem for both individuals and society. While some may suggest obesity is simply the result of individual choices, how did so many people suddenly begin to make such bad choices? Rather than the result of individual choices, perhaps obesity is the result of dietary options available to our society. This might explain variations in obesity rates from one geographic region to another. Wealth distribution, health care, and even the availability of food may also explain differing rates of obesity. In short, to those who have developed the sociological imagination, a variety of factors are clearly behind this epidemic of obesity.

After reading the assigned chapters in the textbook and visiting the website,
Overweight and obesity, discuss each of the following points:

  1. Using the definition provided by the text, define how obesity could be categorized as a social problem.
    • What are examples of individual and societal factors leading to obesity?
    • What are the individual and social consequences of doing nothing to address this problem?
  2. Theoretical perspectives
    • How would a conflict theorist explain the problem of obesity?
    • How would a functionalist explain the problem of obesity?
    • How would a symbolic interactionist explain the problem of obesity?
  3. Based on your research, and personal reflection on which theoretical perspective is most like your own views, which theory does the best job at explaining the causes of obesity?  Based on this analysis, explain why or why not the issue of obesity should be addressed as a social problem.

Additional research, focusing on scholarly sources, is expected. Websites can be included in your research, and eventually included in your list of references, although you are expected to rely on authoritative sources. You may also look ahead in your textbook, since health issues are discussed in several chapters.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length.

conduct Internet research about poverty in the United States

Create a photo essay that depicts the economic struggles that many Americans are facing today. Your photo essay should have an organized theme, linking two photos in some way in the essay.

Theme ideas include a certain area or region (urban or rural), lost jobs, a personal story, the recession, immigration, economic impact of globalization, low-paying jobs, slums, kids and poverty, hunger, elderly and poverty, single parents and poverty, health care and poverty, drugs, or other social issues that may be associated with poverty. You are not limited to these ideas; you may pick any theme that you think depicts the economic struggles of Americans.

You will submit the following in one document:

  1. Two photos that support one common social theme
  2. Each photo must come from a different webpage, article, or source. In other words, do not find an article or photo essay online and copy both photos from that one source. The photos may be your own photos, photos found online, or a combination of both.
  3. Provide a 100-word (minimum) description for each of the two photos that states what each of the photos represents.
  4. The descriptions should educate the reader about the social theme you are presenting.
  5. Provide a 150-word (minimum) summary of your photo theme and explain how social class as a social structure influences the opportunities or life chances for the individuals or individual in your photo essay.
  6. Conclude with a statement of what you learned from this photo essay assignment.

Please make sure to cite the source of each photo and any other source materials used in this assignment

doable dissertation study, assignment help

Need help answering the following two part question using citations. I need help in establishing the research gap. Focusing on Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) in the alternative school setting. Word count around 250 or more for each part. APA format

Part 1

To implement a “doable” dissertation study, the doctoral learner must transition from a topic of interest to identifying gap in the extant research. That is, the dissertation problem must emerge as a gap from prior research. Discuss the gap you have identified for your dissertation study and the research that outlines the gap for your study. How is your dissertation topic justified by prior research? Explain

Part 2

The Background of the Problem section in Chapter 2 identifies, based on prior research, the gap or need that informs the topic and problem statement for the research study. Discuss the research gap you have identified for your dissertation study. How does this gap inform the problem statement of the study? How does the problem statement, in turn, inform the theoretical foundation you select for the study? How do the problem statement and theoretical foundation inform the development of content for the study’s literature review?

I will attached the articles I am using.

Current event

You are to write a current event paper, approximately 750 words in length, consisting of a summary and analysis of a current event having to do with American government and/or politics. You must cite a minimum of five references (sources) in the paper and include a works cited page at the end of the assignment to provide full bibliographic information for each of the references that was cited in the text of the paper.

Current event papers must be formatted according to MLA style, for papers with no title page (see the following link to access an online resource for MLA style: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08…). In addition, please use Courier New 12 point as the paper’s font, and ensure the assignment is double-spaced.

The current event paper should have the following elements:

  • Provide a thorough, but brief, summary of the political issue. An understanding of the issue should be developed by reading the articles uncovered during research for the assignment. The information provided in the summary will lay the foundation for you to react and respond to (analyze) the political issue. Be sure to properly cite within the text (according to MLA style) any information that you obtained from one of your sources. Citations must be provided, even for paraphrased information.
  • Present your perspective on the political issue. Think critically about the topic discussed in the articles and clearly express your thoughts about it in writing. Consider eight standards for critical thinking (Paul and Elder, 2103): clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, and fairness. Ask questions, such as
    1. How can I validate the accuracy of my statement?
    2. How is this information relevant?
    3. How does my conclusion address the complexities of the issue?
    4. What is another interpretation or viewpoint of the issue?
    5. Does my conclusion follow from the data and/or statements I have provided?

Grading will be based on the following criteria:

  • Critical Thinking Skills: the extent to which you have engaged in critical thinking, innovation, and inquiry of a political issue, and has demonstrated analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of information related to the political issue;
  • Communication Skills: the extent to which you have effectively expressed ideas in writing;
  • Personal Responsibility: the ability you have to develop opinions related to a political topic, and recognize the consequences of those choices and decisions;
  • Social Responsibility: the ability you have to demonstrate civic responsibility and engagement by developing an understanding and perspective of a political issue that affects regional, national, and potentially global communities.

Philosophical scene in your selected area

4. Write a report, a literature review (@ 150 – 200 words), of the philosophical scene in your selected area using your best three articles. Discuss the philosophical scene as you can best ascertain it letting the three items be the representatives of the literature. Refer specifically to the items in your review by the author’s last name and the number in your bibliography of three.

5. Finally, Identify the article (from your little bibliography of three) that you have chosen to examine further for Research 5 and 6, upcoming. Identify by author, article title, journal source, volume, date, page, one more time. but this time display (1) the abstract underneath, and (2) the last paragraph of the article. Make sure the article is a philosophical treatment of a topic in the philosophy of “X”. Explain why you believe your search successfully retrieved a philosophy article, peer reviewed, etc. Discuss more fully the logic of the search for that selection.

An abstract?
An abstract is a summary of the article. it is about as long as a paragraph. It often is at the top of the article. The abstract is usually author supplied. Sometimes the database separates it out and you have to click on one of the additional links given with the article title. Not all articles, however, have abstracts.

Before giving up hope on finding an abstract for your selection. Try this: now that you have your selected article, found in the SMC database, etc. do an internet search with the author’s name and article’s title. Very often other subscription based databases themselves will provide an abstract for an article that doesn’t have one. Your article will probably pop up on the internet in one of those special databases and it will have been provided with an abstract, just not author supplied. Look at a few and If there isn’t one there, just say so.
You are trying to find out a little something about the article, and the abstract of an article can be very helpful, especially if you are doing extensive literature searches.

abstract:

A Philosophy, Art Form, Artifact or Antidote?

Abstract–Interdisciplinary research has many faces–a philosophy, an art form, an artifact, and an antidote. It is all of these things because interdisciplinary research attempts to ask questions in ways that cut across disciplinary boundaries. This is not politically correct and universities especially find it difficult to manage interdisciplinarians and their projects. The author argues that interdisciplinary research has persisted as an alternative when traditional research approaches have failed to come up with answers to common problems. Interdisciplinary research will continue to survive as long as there are creative, risk-taking scientists who are dissatisfied with the political and organizational boundaries we establish around disciplines which limit our ability to learn about their commonalities. write a Blog

A blog can be a strong tool to “sell” your opinions. But you cannot simply sling opinions to your readers. You must research your topic and give supporting evidence and points to build your case.

In this posting, you will give an opinion on a topic. You must “build a case” and show research that supports your conclusion and opinion. Of course, you want to use respected and reliable sources to support your opinion. You must name and fully identify at least three such sources. Do not use academic-style references; instead, give enough information for your reader to find the sources easily if he or she wants more information. You must give hyperlinks for at least two of these sources. (Use the procedure we have discussed in class for putting hyperlinks behind key words.)
