600-850 word paper on Industrialization and the Modern State – The Creation of the Regulated Economy

  • The United States went through dramatic economic change during and after the Civil War, as industrialization spread rapidly and changed society. This transformation and some of the apparent abuses that developed led to an increased role of the government in regulating businesses and society. This role was heightened as government was viewed as the arbiter between business and organized labor. One can explore these developments from 1865 on through to World War II. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position. Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con position:

*From 1865 to 1940, the development of labor unions was generally a negative force leading to economic disruption and unnecessary laws that stifled businesses and hindered job growth. (or you can take the position that labor unions had a necessary function and generally positive impact)

  • Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:

1.The position you choose (from the list above)—or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.

2.To support your position, use four specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1940.

3.Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.

4.Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?

Length:
The paper should be 600-to-850 words in length. This normally means 3-to-4 pages for the body of the paper. (The title page and References page do not count in these calculations.) Double-space between lines. Format instructions are below.

Research and References:
You must use a MINIMUM of three sources; the Schultz textbook must be one of them. Your other two sources should be drawn from the list provided below. This is guided research, not open-ended Googling. You will have an alphabetized list of Reference entries at the end, using APA format. You will have short, APA-style in-text citations appropriately placed in the body of the paper; these in-text citations will match the References listed at the end. Except as your instructor might direct, don’t use other sources for your paper than those listed here. (Of course, for “starter research” you can read many sources.)

Source List for Assignment 1:  Be sure to use the Schultz text as a source.  Use at least two of the other sources listed here.

Some sources are “primary” sources from the time period being studied. Some sources below can be accessed via direct link or through the primary sources link on Blackboard. Each week has a different list of primary sources. For others, they are accessible through the Library tab to the left of the screen in Blackboard—once in there, you may do a “key word” search of the article title.

Epidemiology Report

Description of RA

Epidemiology, like all sciences, seeks to find causal relationships in natural phenomena. This acquires urgency in the case of disease because if we are to cure and prevent disease, we must know what caused it. In this assignment, you will discuss the role an epidemiologist plays in the following scenario.

Directions:

Review the introduction to Centervale and read the additional information below.

Outbreak at Centervale’s Hospitals

Hospital-East in Taylor Town and Hospital-West in Simon Town each employ about 500 persons. Last week, each hospital provided the workers and residents with a special dinner to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their incorporation. Five hundred meals were catered at each hospital, and water was the only beverage provided by both hospitals during the meals. Three days later, there is a massive outbreak of diarrhea, followed by a number of deaths (35) among the individuals who ate the meal and among five family members of staff who ate food that the staff members brought home from Hospital-East. Hospital-East reports that in addition, 115 workers called in sick complaining of stomach problems. No illnesses were reported at Hospital-West

Based on the scenario, your textbook readings, and additional research, analyze the illness occurrence and write a 4–8-page report of your findings. In your report, include the following:

  1. Explain the role the epidemiologist would play in responding to this outbreak.
  2. Describe two famous or well-known historical cases in epidemiology that an epidemiologist would review to help him/her respond to this outbreak. Explain your reasons for using these cases. Explain how they would help an epidemiologist respond to this outbreak.
  3. List other causes of diarrheal diseases, and explain how they are or are not a realistic factor to consider in the outbreak.
  4. Explain what measures the epidemiologist would use to describe the outbreak. Justify your answer.
  5. Based on those measures, describe the outbreak. Use contingency tables to explain relationships of exposure to outcome

You should utilize at least 3 scholarly sources beyond the course readings in your research. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Write a 4–8-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Assignment 5

Assignment 1: LASA # 2: PowerPoint Presentation

Utilizing the information you compiled for your literature review paper, and the feedback you received from your instructor about the literature review, prepare a 10-15 minute Power Point presentation on your topic, summarizing the key points and conclusions. Be sure to direct this presentation to an audience in the community. For example, if your paper pertained to a topic in developmental psychology, direct your presentation toward parents, or a parenting center. If your topic pertained to substance abuse, direct it toward a community service agency which may use this information for educating teens or parents about preventing drug use, or current clients about treatments and facilities available. Please state in your presentation the specific audience toward whom your presentation is aimed. Include a reference page in APA format, as well as speaker notes and an audio file with your presentation.

Your slides should provide answers to the following questions:

  • What was your topic?
  • What question did you hope to answer by completing this literature review paper? Explain the practical implications of the conclusions of the literature review and the audience to which they are directed.
  • Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? In other words, which of those is supported by the existing evidence? Be sure to include full coverage of the arguments, including strengths and weaknesses of each of them, supported by your findings from reviewing the relevant articles.
  • Did the researchers consider multicultural factors in their studies? If not, what factors may be involved? What multicultural factors should future studies include?
  • What ethical issues are related to your topic and/or discussed in the studies you reviewed?
  • How do the conclusions of your literature review relate to the various specialization areas in psychology? Tie them to as many as apply from the following areas: biological, cognitive, developmental, social, personality theory, psychopathology, and applied psychology.
  • How can the conclusions of your literature review inform the population towards whom your presentation is directed? How can they apply this information to their daily lives? What advice or ‘take home message’ can you provide to your audience based on the research you reviewed?
  • What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study?
  • Why is your research question important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic?

Your presentation should also follow these guidelines:

  • It should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length.
  • It should be clear, concise, and professional.  Writing should be free of spelling and grammatical errors; it should conform to current APA style (including any in-text citations).
  • It should include graphs, tables, figures, or images illustrating your ideas.
  • There should be a final slide listing references in current APA style.
  • The bulk of the text should be placed in the Notes pages of each slide. Keep the amount of text on the slide, itself, to a minimum.
  • You should record an audio file of your oral presentation. You should also type the text of the speech you would give while showing these slides to an audience should be typed into the Notes area.  If you are unable to use the audio feature, the Notes text will suffice.
  • You can refer to the Power Point tips document provided in the Doc Sharing section of the course.

Submit your presentation to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox by Saturday, April 12, 2014.
