Elements of the Statement of cash flows

Read and complete case study 10-10, “Eat at My Restaurant” in your text. Address the following elements, which are also required elements at the end of the case study:

  • Comment on the difference between net cash provided by operating activities and net income. Speculate on which number is likely to be the better indicator of long-term profitability.
  • Comment on the data reviewed for each firm.
  • Do any of these firms appear to have a cash flow problem?

Your answers should be in an essay form with an introduction and conclusion; ensure you are addressing each element clearly and thoroughly, following these guidelines:

  • Requirement (a) of the problem should be answered in general terms; you do not need to consider the 3 firms in the case. However, you do need to make a choice and rationalize that choice.
  • When addressing requirement (b), you should make AT LEAST 4 observations on each firm, focusing on the cash flow ratios provided.
  • All information should be considered when answering requirement (c). Even if you don’t think any one company is “in trouble,” you should still choose a company and support your choice.

2 pages paper – Must be original

Assignment Choice #1: Case of the Steel Company

Steel Company, a wholesaler that has been in business for two years, purchases its inventory from various suppliers. During the two years, each purchase has been at a lower price than the previous purchase. Steel uses the lower of cost or market method to value inventories. The original cost of the inventory is above replacement cost and below their net realizable value. That is, the net realizable value less the normal profit margin is below replacement cost.

Required: What do you think about the criteria used to determine which costs should be included in the inventory? Summarize the reason for the amounts Steel Company’s inventory should be reported on the balance sheet by explaining the application of lower of cost or market rule in this situation. Appraise, judge, and support why the lower of cost or market rule is used to report inventory.

Your well-written paper must be 2-3 pages, in addition to title and reference pages. The paper should be formatted according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements. Cite at least two peer-reviewed sources, in addition to the required reading for the module.

Answer all of the following questions

1. In class we have discussed Philip Meyer’s article titled “If Hitler Asked you to Electrocute a Stranger, Would You? Probably,” and Alan Brandt’s article on “The Tuskegee Syphilis Study.” Briefly summarize the article indicating the question (or purpose) that the research was intended to answer or fulfill, the methods that were used, and the population on which the research was focused. Lisa McIntyre’s article, “Doing the Right Thing” focuses on ethics in social science research, and the history of the efforts to protect subjects from exploitation and harm. Using the guidelines in the Nuremberg Code discuss the degree to which researchers complied with ethical requirements. The Code (on page 57 of McIntyre’s article) has 10 points. Look at these carefully and consider them in your answer.

2. Symbolic Interactionism, a major perspective in Sociology, stresses that individual’s actions toward one another and interpretations of the world we inhabit are based on their definitions of reality which are learned from interactions with others. We socially construct reality. Language and words are powerful. How does language help us to construct our world and build a culture of shared meaning? (See Chapter 3 for a discussion of this topic.)

3. Sociology is a social science. Thus, sociologists use empirical methods to describe social reality. What is meant by “empirical”? How is sociological research different from individual inquiry? How does using probability strengthen sociological findings?

4. Summarize the major methods for sociological research. At George Mason many students combine full time academic schedules with full or part-time jobs. If you were asked to investigate the effects of having these competing demands, what method(s) would you use? Why?

5. Ellen, Tim, and Marisa volunteer at The Kitchen, a food pantry that serves a poor neighborhood. One afternoon, they find themselves discussing poverty. “I don’t think that we’ll ever completely eliminate poverty, “ says Ellen. “there are poor people in every society, and that leads me to think that poverty must be serving some kind of purpose. Maybe it somehow benefits society as a whole,” she concludes. Tim shakes his head. “I disagree,” he says. “The structure of our economy benefits some people and places others at a disadvantage.” Tim continues to make his case: “For example, women are far more likely to be poor. Generally speaking, the jobs women pay hold less than the men jobs hold. And many of the families in this neighborhood are headed by single mothers.” Ellen, Tim, and Marisa volunteer at The Kitchen, a food pantry that serves a poor neighborhood. One afternoon, they find themselves discussing poverty. “I don’t’ think that we’ll ever completely eliminate poverty,” says Ellen. There are poor people in every society,” she continues. “That leads me to think that poverty must be serving some kind of purpose. Maybe it somehow benefits society as a whole.” Marisa, who has been listening quietly, interjects. “You both have good points,” she says. “But I come at the issue from another angle. Think about the languages we use to talk about the different kinds of work people do.” She pauses: What do we call the people who collect trash? Garbage men. That’s degrading.” Seeing she has their attention, Marisa gives another example: “When someone cleans a house or is a fast food cook, we say they do ‘menial’ work. Surely the way we talk about different kinds of work has an effect on how much people are compensated for doing it.”

Each of these quotes represents a perspective on society, structural functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist. Briefly summarize these perspectives and then identify which of these perspectives Ellen, Tim, and Marisa are using. Which comes closest to your view of society?

6. (a) In class we discussed the term “status” as it is used in sociology. Define status. (2) We occupy multiple statuses. Give examples of at least three statuses that you occupy. (c) Each status has a distinctive set of rights, obligations, and behaviors that are associated with it. In the statuses you occupy, describe these roles, obligations, and behaviors. (d) Role strain and role conflict are often part of our lives as we balance different roles. Describe role strain and role conflict using an example from your own experience.

7.We define groups as a set of people who interact more or less regularly with one another and who are conscious of their identity as a group. Select three groups or more that you feel affiliated with specifying whether these are primary or secondary groups. Are any of these groups related to your race, ethnicity or religion? Do you feel yourself more closely associated with these aspects of your identity in comparison to social or recreational groups? Explain your answer.

Classical Influence on Current Policies and Politics

Compare and contrast at least two of the philosophers discussed in the text: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Burke, Mill, and/or Marx. Give examples of their philosophy being utilized in politics today. This may either be an active policy or the platforms or speeches of candidates.

Cite at least two credible outside sources to support your writing. As one of these, consider http://www.iep.utm.edu/polphil/. (Consider specifically Sections 3a, 3b, and 3c.) Be certain to add citations for your sources.

Requirements:

  • Write a formal essay 2-3 pages in length, complete with citations from at least two outside academic sources
  • Cite these on a separate page at the end of the essay and include a title page at the beginning.
  • Always follow APA guidelines

HISTORY 3160 Instructions for the Paper

HISTORY 3160

Instructions for the Paper

The form of the paper will be in the style of a “critical review essay.” 1500 words minimum. No maximum word limit. Standard margins, any font.

You must upload the paper to turnitin.com (in Course Materials outside of Weekly Folders).

You have three different options for the paper:

(1) Select ONE principal text from the short selected list.

(2) Select your own text (please notify me on your selection)

This paper is not a research, term paper. Rather, I expect you to read the text critically

and with attention to the argument. You will then apply what you have learned in class

or through other reading (always properly cite other sources) in engaging the historical

argument or interpretation of the book. This involves:

A. Describe the argument

B. What methods does the historian use?

C. Respond to the argument: do you agree? Why or why not?

D. What are the merits of the argument? What are its defects?

You may also wish to use additional sources such as a review article or an article which

bears on the subject. All sources must be cited and there must be a bibliography at the end of your paper.

Assignment Expository Essay Outline

So far, you have chosen a topic and located resources for your Expository Essay. Continue developing your essay by developing a thesis statement and creating an outline.

  1. Review the media piece “The Writing Process” to help you develop your thesis statement and create your essay outline.
  2. Use the attached template “Expository Essay Outline” to create your outline.
  3. Incorporate any feedback you received on your thesis statement in the discussion this week.
  4. Use the Reading Strategies and Annotated Reference List assignment from Topic 2 to complete the references, in-text citation, and resource information in the Outline worksheet.
  5. Avoid using quotes in your outline. Instead, paraphrase your information.

Client Description

For this assignment, you will create the client description for your Case Assessment Project. Remember, this is the first portion of a major project. It needs to be narrative, APA compliant, and written in third person. Submitting a professionally written, APA compliant document is critical to your development in this course as it is the first opportunity for your instructor to provide you with feedback on your academic writing and APA format. Use a narrative format to discuss the characteristics below.

Provide the following information (using the same headings) in your client description, adding additional items of preference, if necessary

Client name and gender.

Age (must be 12 years or younger).

Ethnicity. Clearly identify the child’s ethnicity and any relevant factors associated with ethnicity. Be sure to include other languages spoken in the home and any relevant cultural factors that need to be identified. You will explore those cultural issues in a future section.

Physical observations (such as height, weight, general appearance, clothing and its appropriateness for weather/situation, and hygiene).

Medical status (such as medical conditions, overall physical health, major illnesses or hospitalizations in the past, and summary of doctor’s records).

Behavioral, emotional, and cognitive observations (such as eye contact, mannerisms, outgoing versus shy, overactive versus lethargic, talkative versus reluctant, facial expressions, nonverbal characteristics, posture, speech characteristics, and affect).

Academic status and functioning (such as grade level, summary of records and testing if available, grades, behavioral issues, and learning issues). If the student has an Individualized Education Plan or 504 Plan, indicate so in this section.

Family and living situation (such as details about family members or guardians involved with the child).

Social and community involvement (such as sports and religious involvement).

Presenting problem. Complete both of the following for this case:

  • Choose and describe a psychological presenting issue of concern: Why is the student in your office? What brought him/her to counseling? Clearly identify the psychological issue of concern: behavioral changes chemical dependency (child or familial), grief, death of a loved one, depression, suicidal ideation, divorce, anxiety, or homelessness.
  • Choose and describe a disability or special need (ADD, ADHD, giftedness, food allergy, or other exceptionality) as outlined in Chapters 19 and 20 of the course text. Be sure to clearly identify how this issue is a special concern. Consider IEPs, 504 Plans, special accommodations at school, special diet, et cetera. The chosen special need must be clearly identified as a special need. When selecting a special needs issue, keep the scope of the issue manageable.

Civil Litigation Juror Selection

Your supervising attorney is preparing for the Bob v. Widget World trial next week. The facts of the case are the same as last week’s Activity.

She has asked you to prepare the jury selection materials so that she can focus on other preparations for the trial. The court has sent over the Juror Information Sheets which were filled out by the potential jurors.

She would like you to review the sheets provided and prepare a plan for voir dire. The plan should include three sections:

  1. Summarize the information contained in each of the juror information sheets.
  2. List any additional research you would like to do for each specific juror. For instance, will you check each juror’s LinkedIn page? What will you be looking for? What information do you hope to glean? Include how any additional research might be helpful in voir dire.
  3. Create a list of 10 separate questions she might want to ask the jurors during voir dire. If the question is a yes or no question, you should include follow up questions that could elicit additional information.

Attached are the file containing the juror sheets, as well as the file regarding the lawsuit you are selecting jurors for.
