With your target audience already established (Part 1), you will write a 5-6 page research paper, identifying a debatable issue within your field, evaluate “what’s being said” (a mini literature review) by scholars regarding the issue, and take a stance- make a claim and support it with evidence. Your goals for this formal research paper are the following: 1) use the audience analysis information (Part: 1) to guide the writing process and research; 2) become the subject matter expert by thoroughly researching your issue; and 3) present ALL sides of the issue.

  • P1: Your job is to explain what other scholars are saying about your topic. Do not introduce your argument here- just offer a summary in this section. You will need in-text/summary citations.
  • P2: Praise something about the other scholars’ opposing viewpoints. Acknowledge their contributions.
  • P3: Now you will critique what’s being said. Describe something limited, or wrong, or questionable, or outdated about the other viewpoints. You are not TRASHING other scholars; you are simply pointing out “cracks in the foundation”- the gap(s) that will lead you to your main argument.

“I Say!” (Body paragraphs 4-6)

  • P4-6: Transition from talking about other literature to describing your argument. Develop your argument with sources and facts.
  • Shift focus: Describe WHY the difference between your argument and the other viewpoints matters. These paragraphs explain why it is meaningful that the other scholars think one way and you think another.
  • Return to acknowledging/praising opposing scholars’ works and graciously remind the audience about scholars’ weak arguments. Finally, emphasize your argument by restating your thesis statement.

In terms of format, the text of the essay should be 6-8 double-spaced typed pages in length, not counting title page, bibliography, and endnotes (if that is your preferred style of citation). It should feature 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins and the font should be set in Times New Roman at 12-point size. Please include a title page and number the pages of your essay.

In researching your essay, you are expected to demonstrate use of a minimum of four published scholarly sources (books and academic journal articles). At least two of these four sources must be books. The use of these sources must be demonstrated in your citations and bibliography. Also, there is a growing number of scholarly books available in full-text electronic format through Novanet, the library’s online catalogue. You may include on-line full-text scholarly journal articles among your minimum number of sources for the essay, as well as electronic books available through Novanet.

Other online resources that would be counted among your minimum number of acceptable sources would be the various publications available electronically from the Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH) of the Department of National Defence. DHH’s website is at:

A theory explains a relationship between multiple ideas whereas a conceptual model explains a way of thinking. Conceptual models give a mental picture of an idea. Nursing theory describes what nurses do and outcome to be expected. Whitney defines a nursing theory as, “a purposeful and systematic structure of ideas that helps to organize disciplinary thinking and influence the practice of nursing,” and a conceptual model as, “an organizing structure that is used to define theory”. A theory explains a relationship between multiple ideas whereas a conceptual model explains a way of thinking. Conceptual models give a mental picture of an idea. Nursing theory describes what nurses do and outcome to be expected.

Richard Lazarus’s theory of stress, coping and adaptation suggests that people respond with certain situations, such as stress, with negative responses (Whitney, 2018). Whitney states that, “physical and psychological responses to stressors can occur.” Examples of these responses may include high blood pressure, obesity, overeating, and emotional distress. Another example would be soldiers returning to civilian life and experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder.” Lazarus’s focuses on getting people to cope and adapt to stressors.

Nurses often deal with stress in the workplace. Far too often nurses are having to work short staff with a large patient to nurse ratio. Nurses are having to skip lunches. Also, dealing with patient family members can be very stressful and exhausting. Learning how to cope with and channel that stress and anger into something or somewhere else can be very beneficial to not only the nurse but everyone else around them.
